Chernivtsi is one of the oldest cities of Western Ukraine and an important cultural and educational center of Ukraine. The first settlements on the territory of the modern city of Chernivtsi relate to the period of Tripoli culture, the first written mention dates back to 1408 year. Origin of the name of Chernivtsi is associated with a fortress on the left bank of the Prut River, which was established, presumably, by Galician prince Yaroslav Osmomysl in the XII century. The fortress walls were black ("black" spell like "Chornyi" in Ukranian), hence the name of the city. Throughout its history, Chernivtsi was part of different state formations: Galicia-Volyn principality, Hungary, Poland, the Moldavian Principality, Austria, Romania and the USSR. The economy of modern City of Chernivtsi has dominated food industry, woodworking and machine-building industry. Thanks to the rich cultural heritage and numerous architectural monuments in the city is developing the tourism industry.
